Hello, friends! I know that it has been a good long while since my last post and I do apologize! I mentioned earlier in the summer that I have been working on a super secret project and it has absolutely zapped up all of my time and energy. I am still working on it in earnest, but am hoping to spill the beans soon!
This summer I noticed that one of my old favorite pictures/pins was receiving a lot of attention. Anyone remember this?
Since I’ve had so many questions about it I wanted to provide just a tad more detail about how I use this in my classroom. First of all, I print and laminate enough blank ten frames to see us through 180 days of school. I put them up right next to my calendar board and introduce them on the first day as part of our calendar routine. Each day we add one sticker to keep track of the days that we have been here. I keep it pretty simple at the beginning, but as the first few ten frames fill up it generates more and more quality conversations and questions.
I point out how our sticker ten frames and the place value pockets on the bulletin board (I have this one) can work together. The kiddos begin to realize that when we fill up a ten frame it is also time to bundle up ten straws, etc. We use the ten frames to keep track of how many days we have been in school and how many days we have left until certain big events (100th day, anyone?). Don’t tell, but teacher also uses it to mentally note how many days until summer! 🙂
Because I change my stickers each time a new month rolls around, we can keep track of how many school days we’ve had in any given month. Over the year I ask any ten frame question you can think of…”How many more stickers will we need to fill up our next ten frame?”, “How many stickers are in one row of a ten frame?”, “How many stickers would I have if I added the first two ten frames together?” and so on. You can also use the ten frames to practice skip counting by fives or tens.

I give each of my kiddos one of the new stickers at the beginning of each month…just because there are extras and it makes them really happy! We stick them on our name tags and they are able to keep track of the months for themselves.
