This week my first graders and I have been studying the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They absolutely LOVE learning about historical figures and I am always amazed by the ways in which they are inspired by them. We started off with a Google Slides presentation about the life of Dr. King, followed up with a quick digital Jeopardy-style quiz game.

My students loved looking at the real photographs. Afterwards we did a Google Earth tour of some important locations in Dr. King’s life: his birth home in Atlanta, the Lincoln Memorial where he gave his, “I have a dream” speech, the streets of Montgomery, Alabama, and more. We had a wonderful class discussion about our own dreams for a better world. My cute first graders especially loved embellishing their written ideas with this little craft/writing activity and then having them put on display.

We are continuing our study of Dr. King’s life and legacy throughout the week. I think it is important for our students to understand the significance of his impact…and to know why they don’t have school on Monday. 🙂 If you are looking for a resource to help you teach about Martin Luther King, Jr. day, you may want to check out this new packet.
