Five for Friday

Hurrah for Friday!  It has been such an exhausting week and I could not be more happy that we have a beautiful fall weekend before us!  I think I may have overdone it a little bit this week.  I was so tired that I accidentally slept right through my alarm and was an hour late for school yesterday…  Yikes!  I was totally embarrassed, but thank goodness for my awesome team who thought it was hilarious and willingly took care of my kids for that hour!  I might sleep the whole weekend just to make sure this doesn’t happen again!

Anywho, as it is Friday, here are my Five for Friday!

Please note that my life was utterly consumed by school this week and the following are tidbits from my classroom, not my utterly cool personal life…which is totally non-existent as of right now.  Hopefully I can change that up a bit this next week :).

1. We started learning about informational text.  My students can now confidently tell you (and they are very anxious to have listeners) the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts.  They can also recognize and use basic non-fiction text features very well!  Here are a few anchor charts that we used this week:

2. We talked a lot about bats.  I have never taught thematically until this year and I am simply loving it!  I find that my kids as well as myself are more excited and engaged when our standards are somehow linked into a theme.

3. I am also pretty new to teaching blogs and I am just loving finding so many amazing ideas out there!  One teacher that I admire so much is Cara Carroll, the inspiration and source for this bat pictograph activity.

4. We played a few of my October Packet dice games throughout the week!  These have been great for quick and easy ways to reinforce number recognition.  The kids loved this one because with each roll of the dice they got to color in one part of a costume.

5. I have to confess that I have a great love for the standards I am expected to teach.  I love trying to work them into meaningful activities for my students.  That being said, I do think that in first grade (and probably any grade!) there has to be a place for just plain fun.  My kids loved making these simple but darling styrofoam cup spiders this week!  Don’t worry, we totally worked it into non-fiction book comprehension with a few choice spider books!

That’s my classroom this week!  Have a great weekend!

Your text features anchor chart is the clearest and most effective one I've seen! Any chance that you are sharing your labels and examples? elna.munson[at]gmail.com . Thanks so much!
