2. We talked a lot about bats. I have never taught thematically until this year and I am simply loving it! I find that my kids as well as myself are more excited and engaged when our standards are somehow linked into a theme.
3. I am also pretty new to teaching blogs and I am just loving finding so many amazing ideas out there! One teacher that I admire so much is Cara Carroll, the inspiration and source for this bat pictograph activity.
4. We played a few of my October Packet dice games throughout the week! These have been great for quick and easy ways to reinforce number recognition. The kids loved this one because with each roll of the dice they got to color in one part of a costume.
5. I have to confess that I have a great love for the standards I am expected to teach. I love trying to work them into meaningful activities for my students. That being said, I do think that in first grade (and probably any grade!) there has to be a place for just plain fun. My kids loved making these simple but darling styrofoam cup spiders this week! Don’t worry, we totally worked it into non-fiction book comprehension with a few choice spider books!
